Brand new for 2017 I am launching a Premium Service Diving to Scuba Guru’s dive offerings! The central idea is that those who select to use the Premium Service will have me exclusively during the course of their stay here in Salang. Whether for fun dives or diving courses I will take on no other customers than the Premium booking. Now that is truly unique to Scuba Guru!
1 Premium Service Diving
2 Premium Service Diving with Accommodation
3 Premium Service Diving with Accommodation and Food
If that sounds of interest to you then please find the details below. Prices and the terms and conditions are at the bottom of the page.
While I have always tried to give the best service possible to all my guests, this new feature will offer options that are certainly unique on Tioman and rarely found within the world wide diving industry!
It is standard procedure throughout the diving industry worldwide to ‘double’ book. Let me give you an example from my bookings for last year – in July last year I had one guy who wanted to take his rescue course and do some fun dives. He was coming to Tioman with three friends who wanted to take their Open Water course. They had allowed enough time and all went well, and so everybody got to achieve their objectives. Earlier in the year I had a couple book up for their Open Water. A week or so later I had another couple inquiring about the same course with exactly the same schedule so I ended up teaching them together as one group.
As long as safety is maintained, PADI standards are followed, and the learning experience is not compromised, then this is perfectly acceptable. By adding a social dimension to the diving, some people find that this enhances their overall experience. But it doesn’t suit everyone, and it is for those people that this service is aimed at.
If you book the Premium Service I undertake to teach or guide only the people within that booking.
But there is more. I undertake to arrange land and ferry transport when support is needed. I can book the best available accommodation to fit my client’s budget. I will try to meet and greet my guests either on or near the jetty and brief them on the facilities to be found in Salang. At this stage we can finalise any details of schedule. If time and budget allows I can recommend alternative activities and locations on Tioman Island.
I intend to offer three levels of service – Premium Diving – Premium Diving and Accommodation and finally – Premium Diving and Accommodation with Food. I feel that this method offers the maximum flexibility to meet the varying needs of both students and divers.
Premium Service Diving
I don’t have my own dive facility, equipment or boat. I operate by using the existing dive shops in Salang. There are six shops to choose from and I obviously tend to use the most cooperative shops who value my custom and so enable me to provide a high level of service.
That said I do not run the schedule of their boats and this can vary, particularly over the week ends when they have to meet the needs of their other customers. This in fact is often determined by the ferry schedules to allow for arrivals and departures.
I also try to choose the less busy of the shops, but again particularly at the weekends this can be difficult since sometimes they are all busy.
There is always the option for me to rent a speed boat specifically and solely for the use of my customers. Details and prices are available on request.
Since I have been diving and instruction for over fifteen years in Salang, I am fully confident of either giving you an excellent course or showing you the best of Tioman diving.
Premium Service Diving with Accommodation
During my time working for a variety of dive shops in Salang I had a few negative experiences trying to book customer accommodation, so it was with some hesitation that I decided that I had to offer this as a way of helping my guests.
Only one of the resorts has a computerised booking system – and I was doubly impressed that all the office staff know how to use it! However the rest of them using a variety of paper versions with various levels of effectiveness.
The best rooms in the village are the recently refurbished rooms at Salang Indah. However, I hesitate to use them because of the problems mentioned above.
I have basically settled on two resorts which I use for most of my bookings. Salang Pusaka, who have the computer based system and Ella’s Place. I have a good relationship with the family at Ella’s, and whenever I or they have made a mistake with the bookings then they have always found an acceptable alternative.
At both the resorts the rooms are well maintained, as are the grounds. Ella’s is very quiet and close to the beach while Pusaka is set back but more convenient for shops and restaurants.
The cost of a fan cooled chalet suitable for two people is RM 100.00 per night. The cost for regular air conditioned chalets is RM 200.00, while the cost of superior air con chalets with beach views is RM 250.00, both per night.
Premium Service Diving with Accommodation and Food
Salang has a good selection of restaurants four of which are on or near the beach with a couple of burger ‘bars’, fruit stalls and several convenience stores that stock fruit, ice creams and snacks.
What I propose to offer is three meals a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast will be whatever is on the chosen restaurants breakfast menu, with one serving of fruit, one fruit or canned drink, and one or two cups of tea or coffee. Lunch will be local food with one fruit or canned drink plus tea or coffee, while dinner will be whatever takes your fancy, with the usual limit of one fruit or canned drink. In addition I will supply each guest with one 1.5 litre of water each day.
Snacks, ice creams and drinks in between meals will be at the guest’s costs.
I can foresee a potential problem on days when people arrive and depart, so I propose to install a price list of RM 20.00 for breakfast, RM 30.00 for lunch and RM 50.00 for dinner, giving a full daily total of RM 100.00.
I will be adding photographs of a few typical menus in February 20117.
Premium Service in Conclusion
Apart from my undivided attention, both on land and in the water, what you get with Premium Service is the benefit of my 15 years of living and working in Salang. One of my divers last year mentioned that it was really helpful to have someone with inside knowledge to guide them.
What you get in Salang is not ‘McHilton’ standards that are available worldwide and are all the same. What you get in Salang is an authentic experience of Malaysian village life set in a tropical island resort. Many of the shops and smaller resorts are family run and family staffed.
There is very little beach selling. There are no paragliding, banana or doughnut speed boat outfits. When people laugh or talk to you it is a close to genuine as you will find – it is not motivated by just selling you a t-shirt or a day trip.
That said, I cannot control the way the local people run their business. This is Malaysia and they are going to do it the Malaysian way – which really is how it should be. So you might find it necessary to ask for towels and toilet paper, and you should bring your own soap, shampoo and toothpaste.
Premium Service Diving – Terms and Conditions
To make a confirmed Premium Service Diving booking a deposit of 50% will need to be deposited in my bank account. I cannot refuse other bookings for the period of time in question until this deposit has been received.
If food and accommodation are a part of the package, then this element of the bill will need to be settled in cash on arrival.
The remainder can be settled in cash, by bank transfer, or by credit card as soon as possible after arrival.
In the event of cancellations more than thirty days prior to the booking then an administrative deduction of 10% of the total bill will be deducted from any money refunded.
In the event of cancellation less than thirty days prior to arrival then the amount refunded will be at my discretion. I will deduct the 10% administrative cost mentioned above, but after that it will depend on whether or not I have had to refuse other bookings. If I have had no inquiries for the relevant period of time then all the remainder will be refunded. If I have received inquiries for the relevant period of time then I will make an appropriate additional deduction up to but no more than the amount of the original deposit.
For this to be a reasonably satisfactory transaction for both parties it will require honesty on my part and trust on the part of the customer. This in itself is not entirely satisfactory from the customer’s perspective, but I must act to protect my interest.
The customer will need to accept that this is my motivation, and that I will act in good faith.
