Mariya and Gary both work for the Outward Bound organisation, and are stationed in Hong Kong. Outward Bound offers training and opportunities to take on adventurous and challenging skills for young adults worldwide – a fantastic organisation!
They both teach canoeing and other sports like rock climbing, and both characters are very much into developing their skills, experience and teaching abilities. Initially they were both interested in taking my Open Water and Advanced Course Package, but because of their very busy schedule in Hong Kong they decided to slow down a bit while in Salang and get a bit of chill time in instead.
As anyone familiar with my training philosophy will confirm, I think the best way to learn to dive is to do these courses back to back. But I had to respect their decision which under the circumstances they felt was right for them at that time.
Their background and abilities made them a joy to teach. Neither of them had any serious problems with the course and I believe that they had a great time. I certainly did!
Mind you I must admit to being a little nervous since I was now training sports instructors who are in the best possible position to judge and evaluate me! I have taught school teachers, teaching assistants, and even some senior military guys, but Mariya and Gary were my first sports instructors. I hope I shaped up good enough for you!
Josephine Lee was my next student. She came to Salang with a bunch of friends, mainly French exchange students, who were into snorkelling but didn’t want to dive. So she took the PADI Advanced Open Water course on her own.
Since she hadn’t dived in about two years, we went in for a Refresh dive to begin with. Josephine was very competent and comfortable in the water, though I think I detected a slight hesitation when it came to taking off her mask!
Josephine was a good diver anyway so we concentrated on taking her skills up to the next level and I introduced a few challenges that aren’t in the manual. She loved it and had a great time in the few days she spent here.
In fact she enjoyed it so much that she plans to come back for the Rescue Course sometime later this season. So that is something for me to look forward to as well.
Take care guys!!
