Hi, my name is Grahame Massicks, the Scuba Guru!

Chang Qi You and Abdul Hannan Bin Zulkarnain

I have been teaching PADI diving courses in Salang Bay on Tioman Island, Malaysia for more than 15 years. I believe that I bring a unique perspective to scuba instruction here on the island. Unlike the vast majority of the instructors I have met here I have a long term commitment to diving, to this village and island, and to Malaysia in general. Unlike most of them I remember being at my place of work and dreaming of the ocean, diving in it and the wonders to be found there. I also remember how precious holiday time is in a world where the pace of life just gets quicker and quicker.

I also remember how tough it is to find and save the necessary funds to feed your passion! I have not forgotten how it is to be in your position. Some of the local and foreign staff have never been in your position, so they just cannot appreciate it fully.

Three or four years back, I had a particularly lively group of students who started calling me the Scuba Guru. I felt flattered and pleased by this nick name so I have adopted it for this site.

I think it is also worth mentioning that I do all my own emailing.  I have had negative experiences with contact forms and so have some of my friends.  That is not to say that all  of them are no good – but mine is one of the good ones!  Let me assure you that I check my email accounts at least twice a day, unless there are unusual circumstances.  Let me also assure you that it is me, Grahame – the Scuba Guru – who will reply!  I don’t always have the time or the energy to answer straight away, but I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Not many dive facilities can claim that the person dealing with your inquiry will be the guy who looks after you in the water!!

Being a PADI Master Instructor means that I am both very experienced and qualified to teach scuba from introductory dives to the Open Water Diver Course and beyond that up to the Assistant Instructor Course. I am qualified to teach most of the PADI recreational diving courses.

At the moment I am the only independent instructor working in Salang. For you, my potential customer, that means an unmatched commitment to service and quality. You can have absolute confidence in my teaching skills and my unblemished safety record!

Four years ago I teamed up with my long-time friend and former student, Ah Poh to bring diving to his snorkeling guests.

Open Water students + Jon Grevich

Since launching this site I have also teamed up with my friend and fellow PADI diving instructor Jon Grevich. Jon used to instruct in Salang on Tioman Island many years ago but is now a long time Kuala Lumpur resident. Since I have every confidence in his instructing abilities we have arranged that if any of my KL based Open Water students want to start their course in KL by doing the academic and confined water training they will do it with Jon and then come to Salang to complete the open water dives with me. Many people find this a more practical way to get into diving. He also travels down from KL to help me out on the island when I need him. He is the guy on the far right of the photo.

My hobby is underwater digital photography, and to share that passion I have authored two PADI approved Distinctive Specialty Courses on this topic – Digital Photography Diver and Intermediate Digi-Photo Diver. ‘Distinctive Courses’ are part of a group of courses known as Specialty Courses which are designed to deepen and broaden diver’s education and experience. They are written by individual instructors who have a particular interest in whatever the topic is, and can only be taught by the author. They must be submitted to PADI for assessment and approval before they can be taught. Conway Bennett, who was part of the team at the PADI Asia area head office who assessed my courses, said of the first, that it was ‘One of the very best distinctive courses ever submitted’. All of the photographs on this web site have been taken by me, except of course the ones of me!
