Central roundabout and Chinese temple

This page about Mersing is an introduction to the shops, restaurants and accommodation in town, but it is not meant to be a fully comprehensive guide to all it’s facilities. It is more of a work in progress that I intend to expand and elaborate on as time goes by.

Most non Malaysian visitors arrive by bus, but plenty of local people arrive by car, so I have tried to look at the town from these perspectives.

Bus terminal and taxi stand

There are two parking areas adjacent to the jetty. One is to the left as you drive to the jetty and the other is a little further on near the jetty complex. Both are a little pricey but very convenient. On the plus side I have never heard of a car being broken into or vandalised. A cheaper option would be to park in front of the police station. I have never parked there overnight, but it should be secure and it’s free – you have just got a bit of a longer walk to jetty!

If you arrive by bus and are heading directly to the island without stopping in Mersing you can get a taxi from the bus terminal to the jetty for about RM 10.00.

Walk way over busy Jalan Endau

If you prefer to walk, go left when you leave the bus station and head down Jalan Jeti. This brings you into the centre of town. There is now a pedestrian walk way over the busy Jalan Endau which drops down into Jalan Sulaiman. Here you will find the Mersing branch of KFC and Public Bank which has an international card ATM.

Carry on down Jalan Sulaiman until it curves into Jalan Abu Bakar. Keep heading left and it is less than 100 meters to the Jetty entrance. Follow the link below for my explanation of the procedure for paying the Marine Park Fee and the ferry ticket, and getting a boarding pass:

If you need to see a doctor you can go to the local hospital on Jalan Ismail, but the queues can be endless. I prefer to visit one of the many clinics in town. Standards are good and prices are reasonable. There is also a dentist on Jalan Dato Mohd Ali called Clinic Gigi.

There is also a local branch of Guardian for cosmetics, soaps, first aid, mozzy repellents and sun block. There is also a supermarket called Giant for grocery supplies. Both are on Jalan Ismail.

The post office is on Jalan Abu Bakar, just by the junction for Jalan Sultanah, which is where you will find the police station.

If you are spending the night in town, or have a few hours to kill, scroll down below the map for a short introduction to the restaurants and hotels within walking distance of the centre of town.

Mersing Restaurants

Food is one of Mersing’ highlights. You will find international chains like KFC and Pizza Hut, and sometimes that is just what you need. But that is not what eating in Asia is all about. Below is a selection of my favourite eateries – enjoy! ‘Nasi campur’ literally means mixed rice. It is actually a traditional Malaysian buffet. Help yourself to rice and then add whatever takes your fancy from the spread.

Mersing Hotels

I have stayed in some truly awful hotels in Malaysia, so I was surprised and delighted when I went around town to research these hotels. On the day of my tour all the hotels I went to were clean and well decorated. They all provided free WiFi. Most had free tea and coffee making, and fridges. Well done guys!
