Advanced Open Water Diver – how it worksBook My Advanced Diver Course
The idea of PADI’s Advanced Open Water Diver course is to broaden and deepen your diving skills and knowledge, under the guidance of a PADI instructor. You achieve this by doing something while diving, rather than just diving for fun. You focus on specific diving skills relative to the type of dive that you choose to do, so each of the five dives are different.
It is a less academic course than the Open Water Course, with the emphasis on the in water experience. Most people who complete this course do it relatively early in their diving career, and what I see in most of my students is a massive boost in confidence!
You need to be reasonably fit and healthy to undertake the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course, so please check out the medical form below. Make sure that you can answer ‘No’ to all the questions on the first page. If you need to answer ‘Yes’ to any of the questions, print out the form, and seek the advice of your doctor. If he declares you fit to dive, please get him or her to fill out the form and then bring it with you when you visit.Medical Statement PDF
PADI stipulates that you must make two compulsory dives: Deep and Navigation
To complete the course you choose three of the following different aspects of diving:
AWARE – Fish Identification
Diver Propulsion Vehicle
Multilevel and Computer
Peak Performance Buoyancy
Search and recovery
Each dive is called an Adventure dive. An Adventure dive is the first dive of their respective specialty course and can be credited towards specialty certification. Completed specialty courses can also be credited towards the Advanced Open Water certification. This makes for an integrated and highly convenient system of diver development which you can use to achieve your next level of diver certification.
I try to make sure that all the shore dives are completed at different dive sites to provide you with more experience, and to show you the variety of shore diving available here in Salang on Tioman Island.
During 2016 the sea has washed away some of the sand from the lower parts of the beach. This has uncovered some of the rocks below and has made the beach more difficult to cross in bare feet. So I strongly advise participants to bring a pair of flip flops to wear into the water until we are up to our chests. You can then float, take of your flip flops and put on your fins.
The two boat dives are your opportunity to experience the best of Tioman’s diving, and are always conducted at different dive sites.
To start this course you must have an Open Water Diver certification, but not necessarily issued by PADI.
